CREATIVE CAMPUS PRESENTS THE NEST

Community Event Scheduled for February 25, 2012

TUSCALOOSA, AL –  The University of Alabama’s Creative Campus is pleased to present The Nest, a tornado-recovery arts initiative. Working with Kelly Shannon, a graduate student in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Alabama, Creative Campus has built a larger-than-life nest with branches and tornado debris from the aftermath of April 27th. University of Alabama students cleared and collected the debris for use in the sculpture in partnership with the Tuscaloosa Area Volunteer Reception Center. The Nest–a beacon of rejuvenation in the midst of the tornado's destruction–weaves together these scattered pieces of the Tuscaloosa community. Creative Campus believes art can be a powerful mode of recovery. We hope The Nest will provide those affected by the April tornado with a compelling symbol of comfort, warmth, and growth.

On February 25th in Rosedale Park, join Creative Campus and Tuscaloosa Park and Recreation Authority from 1pm to 3pm for The Nest’s unveiling and an interactive community event. We invite community members to paint and assemble their own branches into The Nest sculpture in commemoration of April 27th. As we weave together our community’s fragments, there will be an April 27th testimonial from UA faculty member Patti White and a performance by trumpeter Brice Miller. Earlier this month, Creative Campus interns and READ Alabama volunteers brought twigs into Tuscaloosa Magnet, Cottondale, and Holt elementary schools. These sticks were painted and decorated by students and will become a part of The Nest at the event, as well. After the final branches are placed into The Nest, the sculpture will become a public art installation at Rosedale Park. The event is free and open to all.
