Date Night: New Orleans Jazz & Gumbo Night
Thu, 10/27/2005 - 4:24pm
Creative Campus hosted a gumbo dinner prior to the Alabama Jazz Ensemble's concert with guest vocalist Kathy Kosins on October 27, broadening the musical experience by providing a social orientation. A member of the School of Music's jazz faculty treated 200 dinner guests to a short presentation on improvisation, which helped them to better appreciate the improv portions of that night's concert. The dinner also provided a venue for student musicians to demonstrate their talents.
Although planning for the event had begun in June, Creative Campus interns recognized the New Orleans Jazz & Gumbo night as an opportunity to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina, which occurred that August. Creative Campus raised $400 in one hour, which the Student Government Association distributed to displaced UA students via book scholarships. In addition to SGA, co-sponsors included the Honors Program Student Association, African-American Graduate Student Association and Sigma Alpha Iota. New Orleans Bar & Grill donated the food.
