National Day of Writing

An open call for all types of writers was held on October 20, 2009. The National Day of Writing, established by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) created an online gallery for the public to submit their writings. It’s a never-ending gallery exhibition. E-mails, blogs, short stories, wikis, to-do lists, poems, any many other categories were accepted on and after this day. The NCTE also provided a way for members of their organizing to connect with their local community through creating local online galleries. Dr. Lisa Scherff, Associate Professor of English Education at the University of Alabama, is the curator of the “University of Alabama & Tuscaloosa Gallery.” Writers submitted their work to her, and after she reviewed each piece, she displayed them on the Web site. Viewers of this gallery can scroll through all the different submissions.

Although submissions were accepted prior and after The National Day of Writing, Creative Campus offered “Writing Submission Hubs” at Graves and Maxwell Hall throughout the entire day of the event. The hubs housed computers for submissions and volunteers with writing prompts if inspiration was needed. The day allowed writers and non-writers alike to have an online publication for a savvy celebration.
