2010: A Space Oddity

"Imagination will take us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere." -Carl Sagan

On March 6, 2010, Creative Campus hosted 2010: A Space Oddity, a collaborative science and arts convention. The goal of 2010: ASO was to explore how the arts and sciences come together to inspire and create through science fiction.  Throughout the day there were various discussions ranging from robotics, science fiction story development, astronomy, and sci-fi book cover development. Along side the discussions were a host of poetry and short story readings, creative writing workshops, art gallery, tabletop gaming, and several University of Alabama student organization booths set up with experiments and video games.

2010: ASO brought together several guest speakers including authors and editors and several University professors from departments such as Astronomy and Physics, Computer Sciences, and Anthropology. Special guests included Nebula award winner and nominee author Jack McDevitt, authors Joanne Merriam and David Kopaska-Merkel, editor/author Peg Duthie, author Alex White, and Nebula nominated editor Lou Anders. Of the many participating University staff from the Astronomy and Physics department were Dr. Ben Harms, Dr. Dawn Williams, Dr. William Keel, and Dr. Dean Townsley; Adam Schwartz of Telecommunication and Film, Dr. Jason DeCaro from Anthropology, and Dr. Monica Anderson of Computer Sciences.

2010: ASO was first conceived out of casual conversation about literature by the science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson in September.  Over the course of six months, 2010: ASO evolved and molded into what was implemented on Saturday, March 6th. Through walls, dead ends, restarts, and with the help and insight of many Creative Campus staff and interns, professors, and several various individuals, 2010: A Space Oddity became successfully organized and implemented.
