Alexander String Quartet

Organic chemistry professor, Dr. Silas Blackstock, contacted Creative Campus to aid in the process of reaching UA students about a rare opportunity to hear the Alexander String Quartet perform live in Tuscaloosa for free. Dr. Blackstock, a member of the String Quartet Society together with Creative Campus intern Andi Johnson, reserved time for interns to speak to classes about the concert promoting the string quartet performance as “Not Your Average Date Night”. Johnson worked to make connections with local business to offer incentives for students to attend the concert.  Not only was concert attendance free of admission, but additionally patrons could use their concert program as a coupon for a discount towards completing their date night at a local dining establishment. Some of the participating establishments were Starbucks, Cold Stone Creamery, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Cypress Inn as part of this event.

The collaboration between Dr. Blackstock and Creative Campus resulted in a new youthful audience of approximately 250 strong at the Sunday, October 26 performance of the Alexander String Quartet in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music Building. The program featured a "World War II" theme in which some works from Haydn, Bartok, and Shostakovich were performed. Creative Campus engaged students by offering an opportunity to gather, relax, and enjoy a sophisticated evening of music and ideological reflection. This concert was especially interesting to attend because of the historical ideology represented in the pieces mirroring many of the same topic discussed early 20th century literature, art, and history classes.
