Boys & Girls Club of West Alabama Arts Exhibition

In continuing Creative Campus' partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of West Alabama, the Arts Exhibition was held during September 2008 at the Boys and Girls Club of West Alabama. The goal of the Arts Exhibition was to provide children an opportunity to engage in the arts that they might not have otherwise had. The event featured hip-hop violinist Derryck "D-Sharp" Gleaton who began by giving some basic background information on the violin, followed by him describing his passion for music. He then performed several classical pieces, explaining the process of making certain sounds with the instrument. D-Sharp then played modern Hip-Hop music, including his own compositions and a freestyle of the theme song of the television show "Spongebob Squarepants," which the kids sang along to.  The children were then allowed to ask questions about the violin, music, or D-Sharp's life as a performer. Gleaton's familiar way of introducing the violin and its charms to the students at the Boys and Girls Club of West Alabama was more than a highlight in their week, but an inspiration for them to pursue the arts.
