The Soloist

The University of Alabama School of Social Work in collaboration with Creative Campus showed the movie The Soloist. The movie was held in recognition of World Mental Health Day which was October 10, 2009, but observed Wednesday, October 21, 2009 due to the fall break holiday. The Soloist is a 2009 drama based on the true life of Nathaniel Ayers, a cello prodigy who develops schizophrenia during his second year at Juilliard. He spent most of his life living on the streets of downtown Los Angeles, but continued to play the cello and violin. 

The movie was followed with a brief discussion by Dr. Deborah Coggins, Psychiatrist and former Chair of the Psychiatry Department at UA and Dr. Celia Laurie, the current state president of NAMI, Mrs. Joanne Terrell and Mr. Gordon McNeil, Social Work Professors.
